The first year of Nicholas’ life is going to be chock full of “firsts” – swimming is just another on the huge list of activities we have wanted to introduce him to. Today we went swimming. Thanx to Keven who has been a lifeguard and helped us feel totally comfortable taking Nicholas into the water. He explained that babies shouldn’t be put under water before 6 months old because the pressure on their eardrums is too strong – pay attention to the pressure on your hips the next time you’re standing in waist-deep water. I always thought it was because they would get water in their ears, but that’s not it at all. Duh. He gets water in his ears during his baths and is just fine.
Nicholas loved the water and kicked his legs like crazy when the waves started. Patrick is going to take him to lessons, starting in February. We didn’t dunk him under today, because we wanted to give him a chance to just get used to being in the pool – it was a great success! We had bought him a Motherease swim diaper, but go figure … he’s outgrown it before he’s worn it even once! So today we used a disposable and I’ll head up to Discount Diapers to look for a reusable diaper for next time.
