I spoke too soon with the last post (of course). That night I was working late (3:30am) when I heard a thud and cry from the bedroom. I didn’t hear Patrick’s voice right away, so I rushed in to find Nicholas howling on the floor and Patrick snoring. He must have been in a very deep sleep to miss that. Funny how a mother wakes up at the slightest whimper, but a father can sleep through some major stuff like that. Well, the rest of the
night morning was spent soothing Nicholas, or trying to, at least. He pretty much nursed for about 5 hours straight, was hot (I didn’t take his temperature, so I don’t know if it was a fever) and fussy. I assumed it was the cold taking a turn for the worse, but we realized the next afternoon that his fourth molar has finally started to pop through, so it was probably a combination of the two. It’s funny … I was commenting to one of the other mums (we were at Andy’s birthday party) that it seemed odd that Nicholas hadn’t sprouted another tooth yet, when she noted how red his cheeks were. I stuck in a finger and did “the sweep” – lo and behold, I felt two sharp ridges where there were only soft gums before – tooth #12 on its way through. How exciting! Now we understand why it was such a fussy night!
Today was interesting to note because he barely ate anything. He had 3 bits of scrambled eggs at breakfast, 4 bites of enchilada at lunch, half a corn thin and 3 half-segments of mandarin orange for a snack, and just less than 1 piece of pizza for dinner. His spirits were high and his energy level was normal, but I wonder if the gums were sore from the tooth breaking through. He wasn’t whiny, as though he was hungry, so I didn’t push it. He was also up until 11pm, which is starting to annoy me. After everyone is gone and we’re back to normal again, I’m going to really work on getting that bedtime back to 8-9pm. I need that quiet time to myself in the evening!
We’ve had a busy weekend, visiting with friends and doing some last-minute shopping. Only 2 sleeps to Christmas (and my birthday)!!! We’re going to have 14 in the house tomorrow afternoon, 13 for dinner, and 8 overnight. Everyone cuddle!
